UK-based woman warns Nigerian men in UK are struggling due to their wives

A UK-based Nigerian woman has recently sparked widespread discussion online after sharing her views on the challenges faced by Nigerian men living in the United Kingdom. According to her, a large number of these men are experiencing serious health issues due to the persistent financial pressure imposed by their wives, despite both partners often earning comparable salaries or, in some cases, the wife earning more.

In a video that has been circulating across social media platforms, the woman explained that many couples in the UK face an imbalance in household responsibilities. She alleged that while women sometimes use their income for personal projects or to assist relatives back home, the husband often bears the full financial weight of the home, expected to cover bills, groceries, and other essential expenses. This creates a situation where the husband is under constant stress, trying to fulfill the role of the “man of the house” while also supporting the household entirely with his own earnings.

She emphasized that this imbalance is not just financial but emotional and psychological as well. The constant pressure and expectation to provide for the family without sufficient support can lead to severe stress, which, according to her, is a major cause of early-onset health problems among Nigerian men in the UK. Many men reportedly develop stress-related illnesses, including high blood pressure and stroke, at ages far younger than expected.

Consequences of prolonged stress

The woman, who works in a hospital, shared her observations from her professional environment. She noted that many Black men she encounters in the hospital are suffering from stress-related health conditions, often caused by the heavy burdens they carry at home. She warned that these issues are preventable if couples share responsibilities more equitably and communicate openly about financial and household matters.

She explained her perspective in her own words: “For this UK, responsibility don kpai so many responsible men. How two people wey dey earn the same salary, if not at all, the woman dey earn higher, you no go bring money come, you go use your own money dey do wetin you like. You go dey push your husband, dey tell am say him be man of the house. Your wife dey work dey send to her family, you dey use all your money dey carter for the family dey answer man of the house.

The one wey dey pain me be say the hospital I dey work, na blacks full there. Many of them get stroke. Even at age 45, which is not meant to be. Wetin dey cause am? Na tress. When them don carry load wey pass you give you, you sef come carry am as man of the house.”

Her remarks have since stirred reactions across social media, with some agreeing that Nigerian men in the UK are indeed under tremendous pressure, while others debated whether the issue is solely about financial imbalance or involves broader relationship dynamics.
