The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has made headlines after arresting three masquerades in connection with violent attacks that occurred during a recent cultural celebration in the state. The incident, which occurred during the Ekid Day festivities in Eket Local Government Area, has sparked both concern and debate among residents and social media users regarding public safety and cultural practices.

The suspects were apprehended by police officers deployed to maintain law and order during the event and were subsequently paraded at the Command’s headquarters in Uyo on Monday. The parade was conducted by the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammad Azare, who provided details of the arrests and the ongoing investigation into the attacks that left several residents injured. Authorities confirmed that the victims are currently receiving medical attention at undisclosed hospitals across the state.

Executive Order and Police Stance

CP Azare highlighted that the actions of the arrested masquerades directly violated an existing Executive Order signed by Governor Umo Eno, which specifically restricts masquerade displays on public streets without prior approval and proper police supervision. The Executive Order is intended to ensure public safety during cultural events while balancing the preservation of local traditions.

The police commissioner emphasized that the government continues to respect cultural heritage and the significance of masquerade performances in local festivities. However, he reiterated that the safety of residents is a priority, and any masquerade activity outside approved locations or without adequate security coverage will not be tolerated. The CP further explained that this approach aims to prevent violence, property damage, and other public disturbances that can arise from unregulated cultural displays.

Community and Social Media Reactions

The arrests and the viral video of the masquerades’ apprehension quickly drew reactions on social media, with users expressing a mix of amusement, criticism, and commentary on the unusual sight of “gods” being arrested. Many residents engaged in humorous exchanges, while others debated the implications of regulating cultural practices for public safety.

@ShaqWiziskIN commented: “The gods are going behind barz. Ibudu later nah.”

@n_ikay added: “Masquerade wey get first name and last name na Mad-Squirrel.”

@joyishere22 reacted: “Gods wey no fit appear and disappear, that one na gods?”

@aktogba wrote: “Ojúju Calabar in Kirikiri Maximum Prison.”

@ItsHimOlaa concluded: “The gods have been arrested.”

The incident has ignited discussions about the balance between maintaining cultural traditions and ensuring public safety, with some calling for stricter enforcement of the Executive Order and others advocating for more culturally sensitive policing methods during such celebrations.
