The issue, which has now gone viral online, was brought to public attention by a close friend of the couple who narrated the unfolding situation on social media.

Friend to the couple.

Friend recounts how the issue started

According to the friend, the man, identified as Ejike, initially relocated his then-girlfriend from Nigeria to the UK in hopes of building a better future together. After completing her studies, the woman eventually secured a job as a nurse, similar to Ejike’s profession.

She reportedly earns about £2,500 monthly, while Ejike earns approximately £2,700, bringing their combined monthly income to an estimated £5,200.

The couple’s monthly household expenses, including rent, utilities, feeding, and other essentials, were said to total around £2,300.

Ejike allegedly proposed that his partner contribute £1,000 monthly, while he handled the remaining £1,300, believing the arrangement was fair based on their income levels.

For the first three months, the woman reportedly paid her share without complaint. However, the friend claimed that after some time, her attitude towards the marriage began to change, leading to frequent misunderstandings and tension at home.

Growing tension leads to divorce filing

The friend further alleged that the disagreements over finances gradually escalated, affecting communication and harmony in their home.

Shockingly, the woman is said to have taken steps toward filing for divorce, a move that has stunned both friends and social media users following the story.

The development has since sparked widespread debate online, with many weighing in on issues of financial responsibility, relationship expectations, and cultural differences among Nigerian couples living abroad.

Recounting the situation, the friend said:

“My guy Ejike brought his girlfriend from Nigeria to UK. Two years after she graduated come begin work as a nurse in UK. The girl makes £2500/month. The guy too is a nurse and he is collecting £2700. That’s £5,200. The guy said their bill a month is £2300. He told the girl to bring £1000 and he will bring £1300. This girl paid this bill for 3 months her attitude changed. As I am talking to you now, she don dey file for divorce.”
