A Nigerian man has gone viral on social media after sharing a harrowing account of how he narrowly escaped a well-orchestrated kidnapping during an interstate bus journey. The terrifying incident has sparked widespread concern about passenger safety on highways, particularly across Enugu and Kogi states, where such attacks have become increasingly reported in recent times.
The story emerged through a voice note sent by a friend who also survived the ordeal, recounting the terrifying moments experienced by all passengers on board the vehicle. Social media users have since reacted in shock, with many expressing empathy for the victims and highlighting the urgent need for improved security on public transportation routes.
Friend Narrates Narrow Escape
In the voice recording, the survivor described how the bus trip, which started as a routine journey from Enugu passing through Kogi, suddenly turned into a life-threatening scenario. The attackers, reportedly armed and organized, struck the bus unexpectedly, creating panic among passengers who had no immediate means to defend themselves.
Passengers recounted the fear and confusion as the bus was targeted, and the realization that their lives were in imminent danger sank in. The man explained that every action taken by the kidnappers was deliberate, aimed at instilling fear and ensuring compliance from everyone on board.
Kidnappers’ Calculated Trick
The survivor provided chilling details about the kidnappers’ method. Shots were fired at the bus, hitting the vehicle in a way that disabled or damaged it, possibly hitting a tyre and shattering the glass. The gunfire forced passengers into immediate submission. The attackers instructed everyone to lie down, issuing threats of violence to anyone who hesitated or resisted.
This tactical approach ensured that no passenger could fight back, giving the kidnappers full control of the situation. The calculated intimidation reflected their experience in executing such abductions and demonstrated the terrifying efficiency of the criminal operation.
Marched Into the Bush
Once control was established, the kidnappers forced all passengers off the road and into a nearby forested area, heightening the sense of isolation and vulnerability. The survivor recounted the harrowing details in the voice note, explaining how quickly the situation escalated and how passengers were compelled to comply under the threat of physical harm.
He narrated: “This was how it happened. As we were going from Enugu and passed through Kogi, they shot us. As they shot us, I think it was the tyre they shot, I don’t even know because I heard a sound like the tyre got burst. You understand? As we wanted to turn, they shot our glass too. Everybody got scared. They said everybody should lie down, lie down, lie down, lie down. If you waste more time now, they’ll flog you. That’s how they carried us into the bush.”
The voice note captured not only the fear and panic of that moment but also the adrenaline and quick thinking that eventually allowed some passengers to escape the situation unharmed. The man’s story underscores the very real dangers facing travelers and the importance of heightened security measures along major highways in Nigeria.
Public Reaction
Social media users have since reacted to the viral account with shock, sympathy, and outrage. Many have praised the survivor for sharing the story, which serves as both a warning to others and a call for authorities to step up protective measures for passengers. Some commenters noted that such incidents highlight the need for improved policing, surveillance, and rapid response units along routes prone to criminal activity.
The video also prompted discussions on the broader issue of insecurity on Nigerian roads and the vulnerability of citizens traveling by road across certain states. Many are urging the government to implement more robust safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
