A Nigerian man has shared a cautionary tale on social media after what began as a simple TikTok chat turned into an expensive lesson about online interactions and trust. The story, which quickly went viral, was posted on X (formerly Twitter) by @mazi_chinonso and has sparked widespread reactions, as many users related to the risks of meeting strangers online and the dangers of sending money to people you have never met in person.

In his account, the man explained that he met a lady on TikTok and they began chatting immediately. On the very first day of conversation, she complained that she had no data to continue the chat. Seeking to help, he kindly offered to subscribe to data for her and even asked for her phone number so they could continue the conversation on WhatsApp. This gesture of goodwill marked the beginning of a sequence of events that would cost him financially and emotionally.

The interaction escalated quickly after moving the conversation to WhatsApp. The man, who is based in Owerri, asked if she could come to meet him in person. She agreed, but only on the condition that he sent her transport money. Eager to see her, he inquired about the amount needed. She initially requested ₦8,000, but he generously sent ₦10,000, exceeding her request. The man believed he was helping a potential relationship blossom, unaware of the trouble that was about to follow.

Shortly after sending the money, the lady claimed to have arrived at the park and even sent a ‘view once’ video as proof of her presence. However, she quickly requested an additional ₦3,000, citing further transport needs, bringing the total amount sent by the man to ₦13,000. This marked the culmination of his financial expenditure and the beginning of his frustration.

Unfortunately for the man, that was the last time he heard from the lady. “Till that day till now, she has not replied my messages,” he lamented. The incident highlights a growing trend where individuals exploit trust and goodwill in online interactions, often leaving victims financially drained and emotionally disappointed.

The story has garnered various reactions online. Many users offered advice and shared their own experiences, emphasizing caution when meeting online acquaintances or sending money to strangers. One commentator wrote, “Anytime ‘transport money’ enters chat, just know you’re in danger.” Another added, “₦13k for lesson no bad, some people paid more,” highlighting that while the amount lost was significant, the emotional and educational takeaway was equally important.

The incident serves as a stark reminder for internet users, especially young men and women who engage in social media interactions, about the potential risks of trusting strangers too quickly. Sending money to someone you’ve never met, or relying solely on online proof such as view-once videos, can easily lead to exploitation. The man’s story now circulates widely as both a cautionary tale and a source of entertainment and reflection for social media users across Nigeria.
