A Nigerian man has taken to social media to strongly criticize pastors who regularly use their wives as negative examples during sermons, calling the behaviour disrespectful and unnecessary.
Sharing his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), the man expressed frustration over how common the trend has become. He noted that it is increasingly uncomfortable to watch pastors “shade” their own wives from the pulpit just to emphasize a point, describing it as embarrassing and completely avoidable.
He stressed that pastors did not marry their wives to turn them into subjects of mockery or bad illustrations in church. Instead, he argued that a pastor should regard his wife as “the best thing that happened to him after salvation,” and if he cannot speak of her with honor, then she should not be mentioned at all during sermons.
According to him, once a pastor begins pointing out his wife’s flaws publicly, the congregation immediately shifts focus from the intended message to the embarrassment happening on stage. This, he added, undermines both the sermon and the respect due to the pastor’s family.
His post quickly went viral, drawing widespread reactions from Nigerians who agreed that many pastors need to handle their personal relationships with more maturity and sensitivity. Several commenters emphasized that church leaders are expected to lead by example and should protect their homes rather than ridicule them before the public.
One user responded, “Omo, this is very true! Pastors drag their wives too much on the pulpit.” Another added, “Respect starts from the pulpit. Focus on preaching Christ, not your wife’s mistakes.”
The discussion continues to gain traction as many Nigerians call for pastors to set healthier boundaries, uphold their wives with dignity, and maintain a higher standard of conduct both in private and in the presence of their congregations.
