A Nigerian lady has sparked widespread debate across social media after revealing what she claims is a simple and effective method to determine if a man is financially capable before going on a date with him. Her advice, shared in a now-viral video, has attracted mixed reactions, with some praising the tip for its practicality, while others criticised it for oversimplifying financial responsibility.
The video, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by @mazi_chinonso, shows the lady advising women to observe a man’s response when they pretend that their mobile data subscription has run out. According to her, this scenario can serve as a “test” to gauge whether a man has money and is willing to provide for small expenses without hesitation.
In her explanation, she stated that if the man subscribes to data costing ₦10,000 or less, it is an indication that he is financially constrained. Conversely, if he subscribes ₦12,000 or more, she interprets this as a sign that the man is financially well-off and able to support minor demands comfortably.
She explained in her own words: “If you want to know if a man has money before going on a date with him, just act like your data has finished and ask him to subscribe for you. If he subs ₦10k or below, he doesn’t have money. But if he subs above ₦10k, hold him well, he has money.”
The statement quickly went viral, triggering a flood of reactions across social media platforms. Many users questioned the logic of using a simple data subscription as a measure of wealth, while others joked about the unusual approach. Some commentators argued that the advice could mislead women and potentially cause them to judge men unfairly, while others viewed it as a playful method to avoid time-wasters.
Among the reactions, one social media user wrote, “So data subscription is now a financial background check?” Another added, “This advice will make women lose good men unnecessarily.” Meanwhile, some women expressed agreement, saying that the tip could help them quickly identify men who are unwilling to spend even a little money on small gestures, saving time and energy in dating.
Despite the mixed opinions, the video continues to circulate online, with thousands of views, shares, and comments. The conversation highlights the ongoing fascination with creative, if unconventional, ways to test financial reliability in potential partners, even if such methods are not fully foolproof.
