A young Nigerian lady has stirred intense reactions across social media after calling out her father over what she described as misplaced financial priorities during a crucial moment in her academic journey.
The lady revealed that her father declined her request for ₦5,000 when she urgently needed money for her Industrial Training (IT) defense at school, explaining that he was expecting funds owed to him to be paid the following week.
In a video that has since gone viral on X (formerly Twitter), shared by @The Benin Blogger, she recounted how she reached out to her father in good faith, asking for a small amount just to manage through the day.
According to her, he advised her to pray for him so that people indebted to him would finally pay, insisting he was short of cash at the time.
However, the situation took an emotional turn when she later noticed messages in their family group chat showing payment receipts of ₦50,000 donated to Saint Mary Catholic Church and another ₦60,000 sent to Winners Chapel.
The contrast between her unmet need and the sizable donations left her feeling hurt and ignored, prompting her to voice her frustration publicly.
Expressing her pain, she said:
“When you begin to hate your parents, people will say ‘he’s still your dad, you’re ungrateful.”
She emphasized that her outburst was not simply about the money, but about feeling overlooked at a critical moment while resources were made available elsewhere.
The revelation quickly ignited online discussions, with many Nigerians weighing in on issues of parental responsibility, financial priorities, and emotional support.
Some sympathized with her, noting that many parents invest heavily in religious contributions or social obligations while neglecting immediate family needs.
One user commented, “Naija parents will do church and big family events but ignore small family needs. I feel her.” Another said, “It’s not about the ₦5k, it’s about care, attention, and showing up for your child.”
Others, however, argued that parents have the right to spend their money as they wish, urging understanding and patience instead of public criticism.
The lady’s experience has continued to resonate with many young Nigerians who feel torn between respecting their parents and expressing emotional hurt when their needs are sidelined.
As the debate rages on, her story has become a reflection of broader conversations around parenting, empathy, finances, and the silent struggles within Nigerian households.
