The Labour Party has officially clarified its stance regarding the participation of its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The party confirmed that Obi will not be entitled to an automatic ticket should he choose to contest under the party’s banner. This announcement underscores the party’s commitment to fair play and adherence to democratic principles within its internal processes.

The statement was delivered by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, during an extensive interview with Punch. Ifoh stressed that the Labour Party’s decision reflects a long-standing policy that all aspirants, irrespective of their past achievements or popularity, must go through the proper channels to secure a nomination. This includes participation in a fully convened party convention where delegates vote for candidates based on party rules and established procedures.

Ifoh elaborated that the party remains steadfast in its commitment to internal democracy, ensuring that no individual, regardless of their political stature or influence, can bypass the party’s nomination processes. “The Labour Party has consistently maintained that ticket allocations will be decided at the party’s convention. The National Executive Committee (NEC) has clearly stated the rules regarding our presidential candidacy. Every candidate must emerge through a democratically convened convention. There is no automatic ticket for anyone, whether for presidential, governorship, or chairmanship aspirants,” Ifoh emphasized.

He further explained that these internal procedures are non-negotiable and cannot be overridden by personal influence or past contributions. Even a highly prominent figure such as Peter Obi must adhere to the party’s nomination rules, ensuring that all aspirants compete on a level playing field. This decision is intended to strengthen transparency, accountability, and the democratic process within the party’s framework.

In addition, Ifoh highlighted that Peter Obi has maintained a noticeable distance from the current Labour Party leadership, led by Julius Abure, for nearly a year. This has led to uncertainty about his political alignment and intentions for the 2027 elections. “Obi’s position in the Labour Party can only be answered by him. Nobody can speak on his behalf. Whether he chooses to remain in the Labour Party or align with the ADC, he alone can clarify his political stance,” Ifoh said, reflecting the ongoing ambiguity surrounding Obi’s future moves.

Despite these tensions, the Labour Party remains open to dialogue and potential reconciliation with Obi and other members who feel aggrieved. However, Ifoh was clear that any reconciliation or internal negotiation will not compromise the party’s established rules and democratic processes for primaries. The party is committed to ensuring that all aspirants, regardless of their influence or popularity, respect the guidelines and procedures set forth by the NEC, thereby upholding the integrity of the nomination process.

The statement has sparked widespread speculation across the political landscape, with observers debating whether Peter Obi will seek the Labour Party ticket under the stipulated conditions or explore opportunities with other political parties. Meanwhile, party members and political analysts continue to emphasize the importance of adhering to internal democracy to prevent favoritism and maintain the credibility of the party’s electoral processes as the 2027 elections approach.[/p>
