The Enugu State Police Command, working alongside the Ministry of Gender Affairs, has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly marrying a 13-year-old girl in the Amufie community, Enugu Ezike, located in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state.

The development followed the circulation of a disturbing video on social media which showed what appeared to be a full traditional wedding ceremony involving the underaged girl. The footage quickly went viral and attracted condemnation from concerned citizens who demanded the immediate intervention of authorities.

According to reports, the girl’s biological parents and a woman identified as Ezenwanyi, who allegedly played a key role in arranging and facilitating the union, were also taken into custody for their involvement in the incident.

Residents of the community expressed shock and disbelief over the matter, describing the situation as heartbreaking and unacceptable. Many noted that the incident has brought renewed attention to the issue of child marriage and abuse in rural areas.

Following the arrest, officials from the Ministry of Gender Affairs confirmed that the underaged girl has been taken to a safe location where she is receiving care, protection, and psychological support.

The Ministry also assured the public that it is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served and that the rights and welfare of the child are fully protected.

In a statement, representatives of the Igbo-Eze North Youth (CINY) commended the quick response of the state government, the Ministry of Gender Affairs, and the police for acting promptly after the video surfaced online.

“This arrest serves as a strong reminder that child marriage is illegal and unacceptable under any circumstances. The law must take its full course to deter others from engaging in such harmful practices,” the group said.

They further called on traditional leaders, parents, and community stakeholders to work together in protecting minors and upholding the rights of children in all communities across the state.

Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that all parties involved will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

The Enugu State Government also reiterated its commitment to enforcing child protection laws and ensuring that perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
