Former UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has dismissed concerns about Nigeria’s rising insecurity, assuring that he feels “perfectly safe” during his visit to Imo State. His statement came amid growing global reports highlighting security challenges in various parts of the country, a narrative that Johnson appeared keen to contrast with his personal experience.
Johnson made the remark on Thursday while addressing participants at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025, held in Owerri. The summit brought together government officials, business leaders, and stakeholders to discuss investment opportunities, economic policies, and infrastructural development in the state. In his address, Johnson acknowledged the warnings he received about potential security threats before embarking on his trip, but emphasized that he chose to proceed with the visit regardless of these cautions.
“When I decided to come to Owerri, I read some things, and there were people saying, ‘There may be some security problems in Nigeria. Have you heard that?’ And I said, ‘Well, I am going to go anyway!’” he said, highlighting his confidence in the arrangements and measures put in place to ensure the safety of delegates and visitors.
Johnson further remarked that everyone present at the summit appeared comfortable and felt secure throughout the event. He specifically thanked Governor Hope Uzodimma for his administration’s efforts to enhance security across Imo State, noting that the improvements were tangible and effective in providing a safe environment for both residents and guests.
“Do you feel safe here today in this conference? Yes, we all feel safe. And I feel perfectly safe. Thank you, Governor, for what you are doing,” he added. His remarks underscored the importance of visible security measures in fostering confidence among investors and foreign dignitaries visiting Nigeria.
Beyond security, Johnson praised Governor Uzodimma’s push for 24-hour electricity supply across the state, describing it as a key factor driving economic transformation and attracting business investments. He explained that reliable electricity would significantly improve industrial productivity, reduce operational costs, and encourage entrepreneurial activities, ultimately boosting the state’s economic performance.
Johnson also highlighted the role of technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in shaping the state’s development trajectory. He stressed that AI represents “the future” and has the potential to revolutionize sectors such as healthcare, education, transportation, and public administration. According to him, integrating AI solutions into governance and business processes could accelerate socio-economic progress and enhance service delivery for citizens.
His visit and remarks come at a time when global discourse around Nigeria’s security situation remains largely focused on negative incidents, including kidnappings, banditry, and communal conflicts. Johnson’s perspective, however, offered an alternative view, illustrating that, at least in certain areas such as Imo State, concerted efforts by state authorities can create a safe and conducive environment for economic and social activities.
By publicly expressing his sense of safety, Johnson effectively reassured international investors and stakeholders that engaging with Nigeria remains viable. His statements also provided an endorsement of the state government’s ongoing initiatives to address security challenges, emphasizing that proactive governance can positively impact both perception and reality in terms of safety and stability.
Overall, Johnson’s remarks at the Imo State Economic Summit highlighted a combination of confidence in personal safety, appreciation for government-led security initiatives, optimism about infrastructural improvements, and enthusiasm for technological innovation as a driver of sustainable development in Nigeria.
