Nigerian soldiers have successfully apprehended a group of suspected bandits who were allegedly operating with AK-47 rifles in a local security patrol vehicle within Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The arrest forms part of an ongoing military operation aimed at curbing insecurity and criminal activities in the region, where reports of armed banditry have increased over recent months.

The suspects were intercepted during a routine patrol operation and were immediately taken into custody for questioning. A video that has since circulated online shows the suspects lying face down on the ground, hands restrained, as soldiers interrogated them about their activities, their source of weapons, and the purpose of their patrols within the community.

During the on-the-spot interrogation, one of the arrested men made a shocking claim that both the patrol vehicle and the firearms had been provided to them by the Kwara State government. He alleged that the group had been conducting operations under the guise of providing security patrols, raising serious concerns about the authenticity and oversight of local security arrangements.

The suspect elaborated that the rifles were not personally collected by him, but by their superior, implying that multiple individuals were complicit in the operation. He further claimed that several patrol missions had been carried out with the involvement of their superior, referred to as “oga Victor,” along with other unnamed individuals. According to him, the weapons and the vehicle were not their personal property but were supplied and controlled by the officials mentioned.

He was quoted saying …

“We have been here for quite a while. We are using the vehicle for patrol. Wallahi, na the truth I dey tell you. Ilorin government na him give us this motor and the weapons. They were the ones that gave us the rifles. We are not the ones that collected the rifles; it was our oga that collected them. I know because I was with them. We go patrol many times with them, including oga Victor. All of them are involved. The weapons are theirs.”

The arrest and the suspects’ allegations have sparked discussions across social media, with many questioning the integrity of local security initiatives and the potential misuse of government resources. Observers have urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the truth and hold any culpable parties accountable.

As of now, official statements from the Kwara State government or military authorities have not been released, and investigations are reportedly ongoing to verify the claims made by the arrested suspects and determine the exact nature of their activities within the state.
