A Nigerian lady has stirred intense online conversations after openly claiming that men, especially those based in Abuja, can also be gold diggers, challenging the popular narrative that only women engage in such behaviour.
There are gold digging men
Sharing her personal experience in a detailed post, the lady explained that her views changed drastically after relocating to the nation’s capital. According to her, she had always been sceptical of claims that some men pursue relationships mainly for financial gain until she experienced it firsthand.
“It is happening. Before I came to Abuja I didn’t believe it. When they told me Abuja men are this and that I didn’t believe it. I’m not the type to judge till it came to me,” she wrote, emphasizing that her conclusions were based on lived experiences rather than assumptions.
She went on to describe a pattern she noticed, where men she met showed unusual interest in her financial status. According to her, such men often asked probing questions about where she lived, whether she stayed alone, her lifestyle, and how much money she earned, with the ultimate intention of asking her for money.
The lady further argued that while women are frequently accused of dating men purely for financial benefits, many men engage in similar behaviour but are rarely called out. She stated that some men deliberately seek financially stable women to depend on, subtly leeching off them under the guise of relationships or companionship.
Social media reactions
Her remarks quickly triggered mixed reactions across social media, with many users sharing similar experiences, while others criticised or mocked her stance.
@iamjecintakel: “This is 100% true. When I moved to Abuja, one man who came to visit refused to leave. He stayed for one week. Ate my food, used my stuff, used the AC 24 hrs and never contributed shi shi. I had to call my brothers to help me chase him away.”
@Feliz: “I have been observing this gathering; all they do is sit down and talk about men and women, marriage, and sex. Is that how unemployed our people have become, or what?”
@LOUISFIRE_TECH: “You women like spending men’s money but small #2500 way man won collect from you now you done already dey cry online. So you see how it feels.”
@Asa: “For a hikers club, these people are always sitting down and talking instead of walking.”
@udaonu: “Deal with it. Upcoming diggers meets old diggers.”
@lamowolabi: “Make we all be gold diggers, there’s plenty gold to go around.”
Overall, the reactions ranged from agreement and personal testimonies to sarcasm, humour, and outright criticism. Many users acknowledged that financial motives often play a role in modern relationships, regardless of gender.
The viral discussion has once again brought attention to conversations around money, dating expectations, and changing relationship dynamics in urban cities like Abuja.
