The Egyptian star was surprisingly left on the bench throughout the encounter at Elland Road, sparking fresh debate about his role under new manager Arne Slot.

After the match, the 33-year-old forward suggested that the club had unfairly turned him into a scapegoat, claiming he was being “thrown under the bus.”

His remarks have since triggered backlash from pundits and fans alike, with many describing the comments as unnecessary and damaging to team unity.

Tension surfaces after benching

Salah later told reporters that his relationship with Arne Slot appeared to have broken down, insisting that he did not deserve to be sidelined given his status and contributions to the club.

“It feels like the club has thrown me under the bus,” Salah said. “I’ve earned respect here, and I don’t know why I’m being blamed.”

The forward added that while he remains committed to Liverpool, the current treatment is “not acceptable” and leaves him frustrated.

Chris Sutton calls remarks ‘embarrassing’

Former Celtic and Chelsea striker Chris Sutton was quick to criticise Salah, branding his comments “embarrassing” and disrespectful to the rest of the squad.

Sutton argued that no player should be above selection decisions, regardless of past achievements.

“If your form drops, you’re the same as everyone else,” Sutton said. “Salah seems to think he’s too big to be benched, and that creates problems in the dressing room.”

Dip in form raises questions

Salah was instrumental in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign last season, finishing with an outstanding 29 goals and 18 assists.

However, his output has declined this term, managing just four goals in 13 league appearances so far.

Slot’s decision to bench him twice in the last three matches has intensified speculation that performance, not favoritism, is driving the manager’s choices.

Carragher’s earlier warning revisited

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher had previously questioned Salah’s public outbursts during his contract uncertainty in late 2024.

Although the winger eventually signed a two-year contract extension, Carragher warned that Salah often speaks out only when situations do not favor him.

Many fans now believe that pattern may be repeating itself.

Pressure mounts on Liverpool camp

With the January transfer window fast approaching, speculation surrounding Salah’s future has resurfaced once again.

Arne Slot, already under scrutiny due to inconsistent performances, is expected to address the issue publicly ahead of Liverpool’s crucial Champions League clash against Inter Milan.

As tensions grow, all eyes will be on how Liverpool manage the situation to prevent further disruption to their season.
