The 36-year-old was sent off early in the game, forcing Everton to play almost the entire match with 10 men. The incident shocked fans, pundits, and players alike, as it is rare to see teammates involved in such a confrontation on the pitch.

In the hours following the match, Gueye released a 60-word statement on Instagram addressing the incident. He accepted full responsibility for his behaviour and issued apologies to Keane, the entire squad, the coaching team, supporters, and the club as a whole.

He admitted that his reaction was unacceptable and did not reflect his true character or values. Gueye emphasised that although football is an emotional sport, nothing justifies lashing out—especially at a teammate.

His statement read:

“I take full responsibility for my reaction. I also apologise to my teammates, the staff, the fans and the club.”

“What happened does not reflect who I am or the values I stand for. Emotions can run high, but nothing justifies such behaviour.”

“I’ll make sure it never happens again. UTT.”

Despite Everton being reduced to 10 men so early, the team delivered an impressive and disciplined performance. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored the only goal of the match in the first half, and David Moyes’ men defended bravely to preserve the lead throughout the second half.

The victory was crucial for the Toffees, lifting them to 11th place in the Premier League table. They now sit above local rivals Liverpool on goal difference, adding extra satisfaction to the hard-fought win.

The club’s supporters have praised the team’s resilience, while many await the Premier League’s disciplinary decision regarding Gueye’s suspension following the red-card incident.
