In a major political development in Rivers State, sixteen members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, have officially left the Peoples Democratic Party b to join the All Progressives Congress b. This move marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the state, signaling a consolidation of support for the ruling party at the national level.

Speaker Amaewhule Announces Defection

Martin Amaewhule, who also serves as the Speaker of the House, made the announcement during plenary on Friday. He confirmed that he had formally resigned from the PDP and had already communicated his decision to his ward chairman. Describing the move as timely and necessary, Amaewhule emphasized that his defection aligns with his personal convictions and the evolving political climate in the state.

Amaewhule Explains Reasons for Leaving PDP

During the plenary session, Amaewhule addressed his colleagues, stating: “Distinguished colleagues, very happily, let me announce that your speaker has decided and has indeed written to my ward chairman of my decision to leave the PDP. APC is my new party.”

He added that he would complete all necessary steps to obtain his APC membership card and formally integrate into the party structure. Amaewhule expressed admiration for President Bola Tinubu, highlighting the President’s leadership and his commitment to addressing insecurity nationwide. He also noted that President Tinubu has demonstrated particular care for Rivers State by involving its citizens in national governance initiatives.

Regarding his reasons for leaving the PDP, Amaewhule cited internal party divisions and a lack of unity as the primary motivations. He emphasized that the shift to APC represents a more stable and constructive political environment that aligns with his vision for effective governance.

Other Lawmakers Who Defected

In addition to the Speaker, fifteen other lawmakers have joined the APC. These include Dumle Maol, Major Jack, Linda Stewart, Franklin Nwabochi, Azeru Opara, Smart Adoki, Enemi George, Solomon Wami, Igwe Aforji, Tekena Wellington, Looloo Opuende, Peter Abbey, Arnold Dennis, Chimezie Nwankwo, and Ofiks Kabang. Their collective defection significantly strengthens the APC’s representation within the Rivers State House of Assembly and is expected to influence legislative activities moving forward.

Assembly’s Recent Support for President Tinubu

The defection comes shortly after the 32-member Rivers State House of Assembly passed a vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu and called on him to seek a second term in office. The motion was spearheaded by Major Jack, the House Leader, and highlighted the assembly’s growing alignment with the federal government and its policies.

This political realignment follows months of tension in the state, dating back to March 18, when President Tinubu declared emergency rule in Rivers State due to prolonged instability. The declaration led to the six-month suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Assembly. Emergency rule was lifted on September 17, 2025, after stabilization measures were implemented.

The recent defections and the assembly’s show of support for APC and President Tinubu signal a shift in the political dynamics of Rivers State, with potential implications for both state and national politics. Observers believe that the move could enhance governance collaboration between the state and federal government while reducing partisan conflicts within the assembly.
