Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the legal representative of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has publicly criticised Senators from Nigeria’s South-East region for what he described as an unsettling silence and lack of action during the recent ambassadorial screening of Reno Omokri, a prominent political figure and outspoken supporter of President Bola Tinubu.

Ejiofor took to X on Friday to express his concerns, warning that the South-East Senators are putting their political careers at risk if they fail to take a firm stance against Omokri’s confirmation. He emphasised that the upcoming 2027 general elections would be a decisive moment for the region’s representatives and that voters would hold them accountable for their inaction.

Ejiofor Issues Strong Warning

In his post, the IPOB lawyer stated: “If Reno Omokri @renoomokri passes this screening, 2027 will be a political judgment day for all Igbo Senators; they must be retired home.” He underscored that Omokri’s confirmation would not only test the courage of these lawmakers but also serve as a referendum on their commitment to their constituents and regional interests.

Ejiofor argued that if Omokri successfully passes the ambassadorial screening, it would be a clear signal to voters that their Senators failed to act in defense of the region’s political and social interests. He encouraged the electorate to prepare to exercise their voting power and, if necessary, vote all South-East Senators out of office during the next election cycle.

Mobilising Voters Ahead of 2027

Further stressing the urgency of the matter, Ejiofor revealed that he plans to mobilise people across the South-East region to obtain their voter cards and actively participate in the 2027 elections. He highlighted that the exercise of this democratic power would determine whether the current Senators deserve another term in office or if their perceived inaction warrants political retirement.

“There is, after all, a threshold to cowardice. Enough, quite frankly, should be enough,” he added, emphasising that voters must take responsibility for holding their representatives accountable and ensuring that their political leaders act in alignment with the region’s interests.

Ejiofor’s statements have ignited debates online, with supporters praising his call for accountability, while critics argue that such declarations may further heighten political tensions in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. The situation underscores the growing scrutiny of political actors in South-East Nigeria as they navigate both internal and national political pressures.
