Former Labour Minister and ex-Anambra Governor, Chris Ngige, narrowly escaped a violent attack after gunmen reportedly ambushed his convoy along the Nkpor–Nnobi road in Idemili North LGA. Fortunately, Ngige was not in the convoy at the time, averting what could have been a far more serious incident.

According to his former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, the attackers opened fire on the convoy, shooting a police officer assigned to protect the former governor. During the attack, the assailants seized the officer’s firearm and uniform, adding to the chaos of the ambush. Eyewitnesses reported hearing several gunshots and seeing the convoy vehicles scatter in panic.

A white Mercedes-Benz SUV, reportedly taken by the attackers during the ambush, was later recovered by police following a high-speed chase. The recovery involved an exchange of gunfire between the assailants and law enforcement personnel, highlighting the dangerous nature of the incident and the swift response of security forces.

Confirming the attack, Anambra State Police PRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that a state-wide manhunt has been launched to apprehend the fleeing suspects. Authorities are actively coordinating with local and federal security agencies to track down those responsible for the violent act and prevent any further incidents along the route.

SP Ikenga further revealed that one police officer sustained minor gunshot injuries during the attack but is currently stable and receiving medical treatment. The recovered vehicle has been secured by police for further forensic investigations, which will include examining bullet trajectories, vehicle damage, and any other evidence that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.

Reports obtained from Vanguard indicated that a woman filming the ambush was tragically shot dead during the incident. Additionally, a nearby shop owner who stepped outside his business during the attack sustained injuries and is presently undergoing surgery. Casualty details remain partially unconfirmed as investigations are ongoing and authorities continue to interview witnesses and review footage of the event.

Officials have reassured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the assailants. Security personnel have been deployed to key areas in Idemili North LGA and surrounding regions to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents. Authorities also emphasized that updates will be provided as new information emerges from the ongoing investigation, underlining their commitment to restoring order and security in the affected communities.
