The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has formally announced a nationwide day of prayer scheduled for Sunday, December 7, calling on all Christians across the country to unite in seeking divine intervention over what the association described as the ongoing Christian genocide in Nigeria.

The announcement was made during CAN’s National Executive Council meeting held in Jos, Plateau State, where leaders of the association emphasized the urgent need for spiritual action in response to escalating attacks against Christian communities and the increasing insecurity that has led to the displacement and suffering of countless citizens.

In a memo dated November 20, signed by the General Secretary, Apostle Prof. Samson A. Fatokun, CAN instructed church leaders, pastors, and all congregations to mobilize their members for a concerted day of intercession, fasting, and prayer. The memo highlighted that this prayer initiative is a crucial platform for Christians to collectively petition God for protection, justice, and restoration for their communities.

“The CAN President, His Eminence Archbishop (Dr.) Daniel C. Okah, has directed that this prayer be approached with utmost fervency, commitment, and spiritual seriousness. We strongly believe that our God will intervene mightily, just as He did in the days of Esther,” the memo read, emphasizing the spiritual significance of collective prayer in confronting national crises.

According to the memo, the prayer on December 7 will focus on several critical objectives, including: ending the alleged genocide against Christians in Nigeria, resettling internally displaced victims, halting terrorist activities that have targeted communities, granting wisdom and guidance to national and local leaders, and restoring lasting peace across the nation.

To further strengthen the spiritual call, CAN referenced biblical passages from 2 Chronicles 7:14, which calls for national humility and repentance to receive divine healing, and Esther 4:15-16, which underscores courage and intercession in the face of national peril. The association encouraged churches to engage in passionate prayers and fasting, expressing confidence that these spiritual exercises would yield divine intervention and protection for the country.

The memo, titled “Declaration of a One-Day Nationwide Prayer Against Christian Genocide in Nigeria,” concluded with CAN reaffirming its unwavering commitment to advocating for the safety, protection, and well-being of Christians across Nigeria. The association also urged other stakeholders, including religious organizations and civil society groups, to join in solidarity for the nationwide spiritual exercise, highlighting that unified prayer can serve as a potent tool in confronting the nation’s security challenges.
