Bishop David Oyedepo, presiding over one of Nigeria’s largest Christian congregations, has issued a pointed criticism against individuals and groups claiming that there is no ongoing genocide in various regions of the country. In a passionate address during a recent church service, the cleric expressed disbelief and concern over these assertions, questioning how anyone could dismiss the repeated violent attacks targeting religious communities and rural settlements across Nigeria.

Referencing the recent violent incident at a Christ Apostolic Church congregation, where worshippers were attacked, Bishop Oyedepo expressed incredulity that such a tragedy could be minimized or ignored. He described the denial of the crisis as not only misleading but dangerous, warning that misinformation of this scale has the potential to misguide the public and hinder urgent intervention efforts.

Critics accused of ignoring reality

During his sermon, Oyedepo accused critics of deliberately distorting the truth, describing them as people who ignore overwhelming evidence of violence and unrest while attempting to convince the public otherwise. According to the cleric, the persistence of these false narratives undermines the severity of the situation and emboldens perpetrators to continue their attacks without fear of accountability.

Spiritual condemnation for misinformation

The Bishop further emphasized the spiritual danger of spreading lies, invoking the wrath of God on those he claimed were intentionally deceiving Nigerians. He urged his congregation to remain vigilant, discerning, and committed to speaking out against injustice and misrepresentation of the crisis affecting vulnerable communities and religious institutions across the nation.

Oyedepo’s strong stance comes amid a growing national debate about the rising wave of attacks on churches, schools, and rural settlements, with citizens demanding transparency, accountability, and decisive action from the government. Many Nigerians have expressed concern over the lack of adequate protection for vulnerable populations, while condemning attempts to downplay the scale of the crisis.

The cleric directly addressed those denying the existence of genocide, saying …

“You say there’s no genocide? So what is genocide? Do you know grammar? The case is already on that record, on genocide, and you say there’s no genocide? Are you sleeping? So what happened last week in a CAC church is that Genocide or genotype? You find a company of liars, hanging around everywhere, as if others are dummies. The Holy Ghost curses liars. Holy Ghost come down and inflict curses on those lying against the truth.”

He concluded his message by urging the Christian community to remain steadfast in prayer and to actively condemn false narratives while standing in solidarity with victims of violence. His remarks, which have already sparked widespread discussion on social media, reflect his continued commitment to defending the interests and safety of religious communities in Nigeria.
