Residents of the Wasagu area in Kebbi State have been struck by yet another violent bandit attack, leaving the community in shock and raising concerns over the increasing insecurity in the region. During the latest incident, eight farmers were abducted, and one other individual sustained injuries while working on their farms in the afternoon, according to local reports.
The attack was confirmed by Hussaini Wasagu, Chairman of Danko Wasagu Local Government, who explained that the assailants stormed the farmlands unexpectedly, overpowered the farmers, and made away with them before local residents could mount any resistance. The injured victim has been rushed to Wasagu General Hospital, where they are receiving medical attention. Security agencies have been notified, and ongoing operations are reportedly underway to secure the safe release of the kidnapped farmers.
Community members described the attackers as heavily armed and highly organized, believed to have crossed into Kebbi State from neighbouring Zamfara State. Eyewitnesses recounted that the gunmen operated with speed and precision, spending several minutes in the area before disappearing into the surrounding forest paths, leaving behind an atmosphere of fear and helplessness among the locals.
This violent incident is part of a growing pattern of banditry in Kebbi State, which has seen repeated attacks on both farming communities and schools. Only a few days prior, the Wasagu area had witnessed a high-profile attack in which schoolgirls were kidnapped, sparking widespread outrage and concern from both local and national authorities. Reports indicate that a total of 25 girls were abducted from their educational institution, adding to the mounting insecurity in the region.
Local officials have assured residents that surveillance and security measures are being strengthened, including increased patrols and cooperation with security agencies from neighbouring states. Despite these assurances, anxiety remains high among the local population, particularly farmers, who feel increasingly vulnerable as banditry continues to disrupt daily life, hinder agricultural activities, and destabilize communities already grappling with poverty and insecurity.
The latest attack has prompted calls from community leaders and residents for urgent government intervention, the deployment of additional security forces, and better intelligence gathering to prevent further kidnappings and attacks in the area.
