The Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has publicly stated that he intends to retire from active politics upon the conclusion of his current tenure as governor. The announcement comes amid growing speculation and discussions across social media and news outlets about his political future and potential ambitions beyond his current role.

Clarifying Political Intentions

In a detailed address at the Government House in Umuahia on Friday, Otti stressed that he has no plans to pursue the presidency, vice-presidency, or a senatorial seat once he completes his governorship. His declaration aims to dispel rumors that have been circulating, particularly following his recent visit to Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, which some critics interpreted as a signal of higher political aspirations.

Response to Viral Speculation

The governor addressed the viral video in which a commentator suggested that Otti might harbor ambitions for future political office. He took the opportunity to clarify his position, emphasizing that the mere expression of an opinion by others does not automatically reflect the truth or his actual intentions.

“In the first place, that is the beauty of democracy. So people should hold their opinions, and we respect people’s opinions. And the fact that you hold a different opinion does not mean you are right,” Otti stated, highlighting the importance of distinguishing between speculation and factual intent.

No Aspirations Beyond Governorship

Otti reiterated firmly that he has no desire to contest for any political office after his current tenure. He emphasized that his focus remains on fulfilling his responsibilities as governor and leaving room for younger leaders to take over political roles in the state and country.

“One of the things he talked about was my ambition after being governor, and I have said it before, and I want to say it again, that by the time I am done with governorship, I will retire. So I do not have presidential ambition, nor vice-presidential ambition. I also do not have senatorial ambition when I finish with the governorship,” he affirmed, making his position on the matter unambiguous.

Mission-Focused Leadership

The governor emphasized that his tenure is guided by a clear mission, focusing on delivering tangible results for Abia State. He also underlined his commitment to creating opportunities for younger political leaders to emerge and contribute to governance in the state and nationally.

“I came on a mission, and when I deliver that mission, I will give way for younger people. So he was talking of the Igbo presidency. I do not even understand what that means. So I think if his thesis is based on that assumption, the assumption has collapsed, because he will not see me on the ballot,” Otti stated, making it clear that discussions about higher political aspirations are misplaced and unfounded.

His remarks have been widely discussed across social media and news platforms, with many applauding his commitment to focus solely on his governorship and his decision to step back from national political ambitions, emphasizing the value of mission-driven leadership and the importance of succession planning in Nigerian politics.
