The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, De Wheno Menu-Toyi, has passed away at the age of 89 following a brief illness, marking the end of an era in the ancient coastal town after nearly five decades of leadership.

The respected monarch, who was one of the most senior traditional rulers in Lagos State, reigned for about 49 years and was a prominent member of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, where he served as the Permanent Vice Chairman until his death.

Throughout his long reign, the late Akran was widely admired for his wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to cultural preservation, peace, and the overall development of Badagry. His influence extended beyond traditional matters, as he played a key role in advocating for tourism, unity, and socio-economic growth in the historic town.

Oyo State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed deep sorrow over the monarch’s passing, describing the development as a monumental loss not only to Badagry Kingdom but to Lagos State and Nigeria at large.

In an official condolence message, the governor sympathised with the people of Badagry, the royal family, and all those affected by the loss of the revered traditional ruler.

He said, “On behalf of my wife, the government and people of Lagos, I commiserate with the people of Badagry, the deceased’s family, friends, associates and traditional institutions on the transition of the paramount ruler of Badagry Kingdom and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

“The death of Oba Akran is a great loss to the people of the ancient town of Badagry, Lagos State, and the nation at large. He was a revered monarch whose leadership and counsel will be deeply missed,” Sanwo-Olu added.

Governor Sanwo-Olu further highlighted the late monarch’s dedication to preserving Badagry’s rich cultural heritage while also attracting development and investment to the town.

“Oba Akran served as a stabilising force within his kingdom, uniting diverse interests and using his position to attract growth and development. His legacy of wisdom, cultural preservation, and advocacy will be cherished by generations to come,” the governor said.

The Lagos State Government urged the people of Badagry, members of the royal family, traditional institutions, and associates to take solace in the remarkable legacy left behind by the late monarch, while praying for divine strength and comfort to bear the loss.
