The speculation, which gained traction across social media and political circles, claimed that Atiku had allegedly agreed to step down for Obi as part of a broader political arrangement aimed at ensuring regional balance and opposition unity ahead of the next general election.

According to the reports, the former PDP presidential candidate was said to have pledged support for a one-term presidency for Peter Obi, after which power would rotate to another region. However, these claims have now been categorically denied.

Reacting to the rumours, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, described the reports as entirely false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation.

Taking to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, December 27, Ibe shared a screenshot of the circulating report and dismissed it with a short but emphatic statement.

“Fake news: Not on the menu!” he wrote.

The strong denial has since reignited political conversations online, with supporters of both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi engaging in heated debates over possible opposition strategies and alliances ahead of 2027.

Some political observers believe the rumours may have been fueled by ongoing discussions about coalition-building among opposition parties, while others see it as an attempt to test public reaction to a potential Atiku-Obi alignment.

The development also comes amid reports that Peter Obi is considering a formal move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has further intensified speculation about realignments within Nigeria’s opposition space.

With the 2027 presidential election still some years away, political manoeuvring appears to be gathering momentum, and Atiku Abubakar has made it clear that he has not stepped down for any candidate.
