The outspoken commentator made the claims while reacting to the heated online debate sparked by Wizkid’s remarks about musical greatness, a comparison that has continued to divide fans and industry observers across social media platforms.

In his reaction, Verydarkman argued that Wizkid lacks the level of originality associated with Fela and even Fela’s sons, Femi and Seun Kuti.

He insisted that Fela’s influence in African music went beyond popularity, stressing that his legacy was built on innovation, fearless expression, and a deep connection with social and political activism.

Verydarkman further questioned Wizkid’s artistic depth, particularly his stage performances, which he described as heavily dependent on backing tracks rather than live delivery.

According to him, live performance is a core element of true artistry, something he believes Fela and his sons mastered through years of consistent stage discipline and musical experimentation.

Verydarkman accuses Wizkid of lacking originality

Expanding on his argument, VeryDarkMan alleged that Wizkid’s music career was built largely on sampling existing songs, claiming that many of his early works were not entirely original.

He referenced Wizkid’s debut era, insisting that several of his songs were inspired by or lifted from earlier records, a practice he believes weakens claims of being musically superior to icons like Fela.

He further stated that originality is a defining factor when comparing generations of musicians, noting that Fela created a distinct sound that later evolved into Afrobeat and influenced artists globally.

According to him, comparing Wizkid to Fela is misplaced, as Fela’s music was rooted in originality, activism, and live performance, qualities he believes Wizkid does not embody in the same way.

Verydarkman also maintained that fame, awards, and international recognition should not be the sole yardstick for measuring greatness, arguing that impact, message, and authenticity matter more in the long run.

His words …

“For you to say you’re bigger than Fela, you no even reach Femi or even the Seun sef when it comes to the art of music, because originality is not in you. You don see where these men the perform for stage? No be the one sound the play for background you go dey jump for stage, when your mouth no even dey follow wetin you dey perform.

We are old school people.

You started your career without originality. This is your first song Hala at your boy you sampled. The original one was in 2009 and yours was released in 2011. If them bring songs wey you sample e go full everywhere. You are bigger than which Fela…”

The comments have since triggered mixed reactions online, with some social media users agreeing with Verydarkman’s stance, while others defended Wizkid’s achievements and influence in the global music scene.
