In a recent interview and social media statement, Kuti revealed that he has never engaged in prayer throughout his life, emphasizing that he does not believe in its efficacy or impact. His remarks come as part of a broader critique of what he considers performative acts of religion that have little effect on personal morality or societal improvement.

Kuti specifically criticized dramatic and public displays of worship, such as kneeling, rolling on the ground, shouting during prayers, and other theatrical expressions. He described such behaviors as superficial, immature, and a form of “eye service” that does not translate into real-life impact or virtue. According to him, these acts often focus more on appearance and social validation than on genuine spiritual growth.

The Afrobeat star emphasized that true spirituality and religious integrity are measured by one’s conduct, daily choices, and the tangible effect one has on the world, rather than ritualistic or verbal expressions of faith. In his view, a person’s actions in everyday life are the most accurate reflection of their moral and spiritual state.

He elaborated further, urging followers to focus on improving themselves and contributing positively to society instead of relying solely on traditional prayers or ritualistic gestures. Kuti maintains that ethical living, accountability, and social responsibility are the closest equivalents to spiritual practice in modern life.

In his own words …

“I have never prayed before in my life, I don’t believe it works. All this eye service wey Una dey do, wey Una go go kneel down for ground, dey roll for ground, dey shout, they’re all childishness. Your life is the prayer. What you do with your life is the prayer. Focus on your actions, the way you treat people, and the impact you leave behind. That is the true expression of spirituality.”

His comments have sparked widespread reactions across social media platforms, with supporters praising his emphasis on ethical living and critics questioning his dismissal of traditional religious practices. The conversation has led to broader discussions on the difference between ritualistic religion and lived spirituality, and how personal values may or may not align with organized religious expectations.
