An elderly Nigerian professor has publicly berated Afrobeats superstar Wizkid over his controversial claim of being greater than legendary musician and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
The criticism comes amid widespread backlash that followed Wizkid’s reported statement to Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, in which the singer allegedly claimed he is better than Fela, a remark that has continued to divide opinions across social media.

Elderly man berates Wizkid
In a viral video currently making the rounds online, the elderly professor did not mince words as he criticised Wizkid’s statement, describing it as disrespectful and historically ignorant.
He questioned the singer’s understanding of Nigeria’s cultural and political history, insisting that Fela Kuti’s impact went far beyond music and entertainment.
According to the professor, Fela was not just a musician but a revolutionary figure whose music, activism, and personal sacrifices helped shape political consciousness in Nigeria and beyond.
He further compared Wizkid’s modern-day success, driven largely by digital platforms and global streaming services, to Fela’s achievements in an era without the internet, social media, or advanced recording technology.

Man cites Fela’s family legacy
The professor also highlighted the sacrifices made by Fela Kuti and his family, referencing the activism of Fela’s mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, who played a key role in Nigeria’s anti-colonial struggle.
He recalled the repeated clashes between Fela and successive Nigerian governments, including raids on his home, harassment, and the tragic incident that led to his mother’s death.
According to him, these sacrifices are part of why Fela’s legacy transcends music and why comparisons with contemporary artists should be approached with humility and historical awareness.
He said in part …
“Wizkid it’s like Ib0 don cool your brain. You have the audacity to say you’re greater than Fela Kuti. Wetin your family do for this country? Fela’s mother fought for the independence of Nigeria. You better go read history well well. Fela Kuti had 52 albums without no internet, phones or apps. Them know Baba for the world. Baba na doctor. He studied medicine in New York. You think say Baba na small boy? You dey m@d? You know how many times federal government don go him house burn am down? Them thr0w him mama out of window. I no know your song bobo”
The professor’s remarks have sparked intense reactions online, with many Nigerians echoing his sentiments and urging younger artists to respect pioneers who paved the way for the global recognition of Nigerian music.
Others, however, argued that musical greatness can be subjective and that every generation has its own icons.
