Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has voiced his deep concern following a serious road accident involving former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua in Makun, Ogun State. The incident occurred on the busy Lagos–Ibadan expressway, leaving the Nigerian-British boxer slightly injured and claiming the lives of two of his companions in the vehicle.
Obi, known for his active engagement in national affairs and concern for citizens' welfare, highlighted the particularly troubling nature of the accident, noting that it occurred while Joshua was in Nigeria for professional and personal engagements. He also expressed worry about reports suggesting that no ambulance was immediately available to transport Joshua to the hospital, raising questions about emergency response readiness on Nigerian highways.
“It is with deep concern that I received the news of the road accident involving former heavyweight boxing champion, Mr. @anthonyjoshua, in Makun, Ogun State,” Obi said in a statement. “It is particularly worrisome that this incident occurred while he was in Nigeria. Many of us are also compelled to reflect on reports that no ambulance was readily available to convey him to the hospital.”
The former presidential candidate extended his heartfelt wishes for a swift recovery to Joshua while offering condolences to the families of the two individuals who lost their lives in the crash. Obi prayed for divine comfort for the bereaved families and for the eternal rest of the departed souls, emphasizing the need for compassion and support during such tragic moments.
“May God Almighty grant him a speedy recovery, and I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of the two lives lost. May God grant them comfort and grant the departed eternal rest. -PO”
Obi’s reaction has since drawn attention on social media, reflecting a widespread concern among Nigerians over road safety, emergency medical response, and the well-being of citizens traveling within the country. The accident has reignited discussions about highway safety protocols and the availability of timely medical interventions for accident victims across Nigeria.
