The Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, Chris Okafor, has reportedly handed himself over to the police following a wave of serious allegations bordering on misconduct and other related offenses.
The development has continued to generate intense public interest, especially on social media, where several claims against the clergyman first surfaced.
Pastor Okafor Turns Himself In
According to the Lagos State Police Command, Pastor Okafor voluntarily presented himself to law enforcement authorities after initially failing to honour a formal police invitation.
The invitation, which was issued by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, was reportedly communicated to him on Sunday, ahead of a scheduled appearance on Monday.
However, when he failed to show up on the agreed date, the police moved to take further action.
Confirming the incident in a statement to TVC on Wednesday, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, provided clarification on the sequence of events.
“When he was invited, he got to us through his lawyer that he would be appearing on Monday. So, on Monday, we waited for him. We didn’t see him, and I directed that he should be arrested. Subsequently, he showed up yesterday,” Jimoh stated.
The police commissioner added that Okafor’s decision to eventually report himself helped to de-escalate the situation.
Case Transferred to Zone 2 for Investigation
CP Jimoh further disclosed that the matter has since been transferred to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Sylvester Alabi, for comprehensive investigation.
According to him, the case was already under active review at the Zone 2 headquarters before Okafor’s appearance at the Lagos State Police Command.
“We later learned that the same matter had been opened at the Zone 2 headquarters with the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, which I verified. He informed me the investigation had been ongoing under his command for about three weeks,” Jimoh explained.
He emphasized that the transfer was necessary to ensure transparency and proper handling of the allegations.
Social Media Outcry Spurs Police Action
Addressing concerns raised by alleged victims and members of the public, the Commissioner of Police highlighted the growing influence of social media in exposing issues that require urgent attention.
He noted that law enforcement agencies now pay close attention to credible complaints shared online.
“The social media has become a veritable space for people to lodge their complaints. We no longer wait for people to come and see the matter before we act in public interest, because if we don’t, the conduct can lead to a breakdown of law and order,” he said.
Jimoh added that the police remain committed to protecting citizens and ensuring that no individual is above the law.
