Billionaire Senator, Ned Nwoko, has officially reacted to the recent public apology issued by a young man who had falsely claimed that the lawmaker paid him and other individuals ₦5 million each to assassinate his estranged wife, renowned actress Regina Daniels. The shocking allegation emerged a few days ago after a video circulated widely across social media platforms, showing the young man making serious accusations against Senator Nwoko, claiming that he sponsored a plot to eliminate the actress. The video quickly went viral, prompting intense reactions from social media users, fans, and concerned Nigerians alike.
Young Man Retracts Allegation After Nwoko Threatens Legal Action
Following the widespread attention the video received, Senator Nwoko promptly threatened to pursue legal action against anyone found culpable in spreading the false claims. Shortly after this warning, the young man in question released an apology video, admitting that his earlier statements were fabricated and created solely as “content” for social media consumption. Despite the retraction, Senator Nwoko took the opportunity to address the larger issue of misinformation, unverified content, and the increasingly unregulated nature of Nigeria’s social media space, stressing the potential harm these actions can cause to individuals and the society at large.
“Nigerian Social Media Space Has Become Unregulated” — Nwoko
In a detailed letter responding to the apology, Senator Ned Nwoko highlighted the incident as a glaring example of the dangers posed by unregulated content on social media. He noted, “The accompanying video, trended a couple of days ago. It is testament to the fact that Nigerian social media space has become one of the most unregulated in the world.”
The senator emphasized that making serious, damaging allegations purely to attract views and social media engagement has become a dangerous trend. He explained, “Laying very serious allegations have become a common trait to attract millions of views without recourse to the damaging effects on the people involved.”
Nwoko further highlighted that many content creators exploit the emotions and sentiments of Nigerians because they perceive there will be little to no consequences for their actions. “Knowing that there could be evasion of consequences because they can easily prey on the emotions of Nigerians encourages this deviant behaviour,” he added.
Senator Nwoko Advocates for Urgent Social Media Regulation
The senator stressed that this incident underscores the pressing need for the social media regulation bill currently before the National Assembly. “This case and many others has now clearly justified the urgent need for the social media bill in the national assembly. You can’t lie to make money and turn around to apologize after criminally defaming and hurting people,” Nwoko stated firmly.
He called for social media companies to be legally mandated to register, open offices in Nigeria, and be held accountable for content published on their platforms. “It is time for social media companies to be mandated to open offices in Nigeria and to take responsibility for what they allow on their platforms,” he asserted. He further drew an analogy, pointing out that if landlords can be held liable for tenants’ illegal activities, foreign digital platforms should similarly be held accountable for hosting defamatory or harmful content online.
“Why Make Exceptions for Foreign Companies?”
Senator Nwoko raised concerns about the double standards in media regulation. While Nigerian media houses comply with defamation laws, foreign social media companies largely operate without accountability. He questioned, “All our local media houses comply with laws concerning defamation. Why make an exception for foreign companies who don’t pay taxes and ultimately avoid all manner of liabilities because of the absence of regulations?”
He warned that without proper oversight, harmful content and misinformation will continue unchecked. “We must effectively be able to apply regulations or there is no end to this. It’s Senator Ned today, who knows who is next?” he added, emphasizing the personal risks of unregulated social media content for any individual in Nigeria.
Expected Benefits of Proposed Social Media Regulation
The senator outlined the potential benefits of his proposed bill, which aims to ensure that all social media companies operate within Nigeria under clearly defined legal and regulatory frameworks. He highlighted several advantages, including:
• Creation of employment opportunities for Nigerians
• Facilitation of technology transfer and knowledge sharing
• Ensuring payment of taxes by global tech companies
• Easier and more cost-effective litigation processes
• Enhanced tracking and prevention of criminal activities, including online fraud
• Local storage of national data to enhance cybersecurity and data protection
He concluded by urging Nigerians to support the proposed social media regulation bill, which he described as essential to ensure accountability, transparency, and the safety of individuals using digital platforms. “Please support my bill on the regulation of social media companies which simply seeks to get them to register in Nigeria and open their offices here,” he emphasized.
