Nollywood actress Ini Edo was visibly emotional during an Instagram Live session after the Christian Association of Nigeria b reportedly threatened to take down her newly released movie titled “A Very Dirty Christmas,” alleging that the title was offensive and insulting to Christianity.

The actress explained that the movie was a labour of love, produced with deep commitment, personal sacrifice, and months of intense promotion, stressing that there was never any intention to mock or disrespect the Christian faith.

Ini Edo breaks down after CAN threatens movie over title

While addressing her followers on Instagram Live, Ini Edo emotionally stated that she and every member of her production team are Christians, adding that the controversy surrounding the movie’s title came as a shock to them.

According to her, the title was never designed to ridicule Christmas or Christianity, and if any concern had been raised earlier during production or promotion, the team would have immediately reconsidered the name.

She said, “I did this movie. I put my sweat, my blood into it. We promoted the movie for such a long time. If at any point anybody had said anything, we wouldn’t have gone on with it. We as a team are all Christians.”

The actress went further to issue a heartfelt apology to CAN and Christians across the country, stating clearly that offending the faith was never her intention.

“If I had known the title ‘A Very Dirty Christmas’ would cause a problem, I would have changed it. CAN, I am sorry. I never meant to insult or disgrace Christians. I am a Christian too,” Ini Edo added, breaking down in tears during the live session.

She also passionately appealed to the association not to pull down the movie, urging them to watch it first before passing judgment.

“Just don’t pull my film, please. Just allow people to watch. Watch the film and come back and say that this film degrades Christians or degrades Christianity. Then I will pull it,” she pleaded.

The controversy has since sparked intense debates across social media platforms, with many Nigerians sharing mixed reactions to CAN’s stance and questioning the association’s priorities, especially in light of other serious challenges facing Christians in different parts of the country.

Many users compared the swift reaction to the movie title with what they described as silence on more pressing issues affecting Christian communities nationwide.

Social media reactions:

@Judechigozie: “Misplaced priority. People supposed to be fighting what is killing its members & believers in Benue and parts of Nigeria but no, they are fighting a person who is not fighting them.”

@realC: “I don’t know why she’s taking CAN seriously. What have they said about the 12 bodies buried by Rev. Dachomo recently?”

@TowersO: “Only fools will see CAN’s action as wrong. They should have titled the movie ‘A Very Dirty Eid’ & release it towards end of Ramadan. This same mindset is why Christians get attacked in the North without consequence.”

@SiftuBari: “CAN who ignores people being killed in the North, now complaining about a movie?”
