The mother of Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr has opened up about the personal reasons behind her decision to cut off ties with some longtime friends, a revelation that has since stirred conversations across social media platforms.
In a candid video currently making rounds on X (formerly Twitter), she spoke openly about how repeated boundary violations, emotional fatigue, and uncomfortable situations pushed her to prioritize her peace over maintaining unhealthy friendships.

According to her, one of the major turning points involved a friend who habitually shared their private conversations with her husband almost immediately after they spoke.
She recounted how the situation unsettled her deeply, saying:
“I told my husband, and he said it was okay. But why would you share what we discussed with your husband? Do I even know him?”
She explained that friendships should be a safe space, and the idea that personal discussions were being relayed to someone she barely knew made her feel exposed and disrespected.
That incident, she revealed, marked the moment she decided to stop taking the friend’s calls and gradually withdrew from the relationship.
She went on to narrate another experience involving a friendship that ended because the friend’s husband repeatedly interfered in their personal matters.
According to her, she found it inappropriate for a third party to be involved in private conversations and decisions between friends, describing the constant intrusion as unsettling and unnecessary.
Over time, she said the interference eroded the trust and comfort she once felt, eventually forcing her to distance herself completely from the friendship.
In yet another instance, she spoke about a longtime friend who constantly complained about her marriage despite being married for over 20 years.
She revealed that the persistent negativity became emotionally draining, adding that she could no longer shoulder the mental and emotional burden of someone else’s unresolved marital frustrations.
According to her, listening to the same complaints over and over again began to affect her own emotional wellbeing, prompting her to step back for the sake of her mental health.
Her revelations quickly divided opinions online. While many applauded her for setting firm boundaries and prioritising her peace, others argued that friendships sometimes require patience, tolerance, and deeper understanding.
Supporters, however, insisted that friendships should be rooted in trust, respect, and emotional safety, noting that walking away from toxic dynamics is sometimes necessary for personal growth.
For Ayra Starr’s mum, the message was clear: protecting one’s mental health is not selfish, and cutting off relationships that threaten inner peace can be a powerful act of self-care.
